… If you desire true and eternal life… let peace be your quest and aim’ (Rule of Benedict, Prol. 17)
Santa Maria College is a Catholic Secondary College for girls. It was established by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of Saint Benedict in Northcote in 1904. The values of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan Order give direction to our College community. We nurture well-informed, articulate and independent young women who are energised by the Word of God and respond to the challenges of the real world with spirit and compassion.
Santa Maria College encourages students to cultivate their talents in a safe and happy environment, balancing the pursuit of academic excellence with emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. Our students have a love of learning, which is nurtured in first-class facilities, by dedicated staff. Our College is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program and both VCE and VCAL pathways for senior students. The academic program is complemented by a diverse and challenging co-curricular program. By immersing themselves in our dynamic educational community, students experience success in all facets of life.
The Catholic Order of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan was founded in Sydney in 1857. This followed a decision of Australia’s first Catholic Archbishop, John Bede Polding, to establish a new congregation of religious women, the first to be founded on Australian soil. From the very beginning, commitment to women and the education of young people, particularly young women, has been at the heart of the congregation’s mission. They opened their first school in 1861 and today Good Samaritan Education continues to lead and support ten schools in Australia.
Throughout their history, the contemporary challenges and needs of the church and society have determined the activities of the Sisters of the Good Samaritan. Further information on the spirituality, charism and work of the Good Samaritan Sisters can be found on their website and in their journal, The Good Oil.
