The Buddy Program at Santa Maria College was established to support the transition process from primary to secondary school. The role of the Buddies is to provide a friendly face for the new students and to provide valuable information about the way Santa Maria College works from a student’s point of view.

Each Year 7 student will be matched (buddied) with a student from our current Year 9 cohort who will be their mentor and help introduce them to the school and facilities.

The Buddy Program forms an integral part of our Ontos Pastoral Care Program at Santa Maria College. The program is structured so that Buddies meet formally once a term during an Ontos lesson. Teaching staff facilitate these sessions which involve games and activities ending with a shared morning tea.

The aim of the Program is that the ‘connection’ will continue for a period of 2 years. Once the Year 7 students reach Year 9, they will become a mentor and will be ‘buddied’ with a new Year 7 student. Fostering positive relationship within the College is testament to our culture at Santa Maria College. Our Buddy Program fosters leadership skills and helps our new students feel comfortable in their new surrounds. It also assists in the new students to feel valued as a member of the Santa Maria College community.
